AuPairWorld is the world’s leading matching platform for au pairs and host families. Since its founding in 1999, AuPairWorld has fundamentally transformed the way au pair placements are arranged, with a clear focus on empowering users to conduct their own searches and providing them with relevant information about their au pair stays.
In 2021, the entire platform was migrated to the Drupal framework and has been continuously expanded and optimized ever since. With the latest relaunch, the website and communication platform were separated at the system level to offer users and employees a significantly improved user experience and to enable further scaling of the platform.
AuPairWorld’s goal is to enable au pairs and host families to find one another independently. The main purpose of aupairworld.com is therefore to provide host families and au pairs with an online platform where they can access information, present themselves, and search for matches around the clock. To achieve this, the platform requires a modern, stable website that keeps pace with the times and offers a reliable means of communication between au pairs and host families.
Until now, these two elements (information and communication) had been intertwined. Maintenance and enhancements became increasingly complex, as the complex backend—including all communications involving thousands of data records—had to be adapted each time.
To lay a solid foundation for the future and ensure good scalability, a decision was made to fundamentally modernize the technical infrastructure. The informational website and the communication platform were to coexist side by side. The solution was a dual architecture with optimized UX, in which switching between the two components would be seamless and users would only need to log in once.
Project Goals and Results
The planned modernization of the platform focused on creating an accessible website and an optimized user experience.
The need for modernization arose from user feedback requesting more flexible filtering options and a matching feature (EasyFind) that would be less rigid and therefore no longer perceived as restrictive. Frequent page reloads were to be avoided.
Existing filters were strategically highlighted to ensure maximum flexibility. This approach virtually eliminates the need for page reloads.
Following the relaunch, the EasyFind functionality is fully accessible. This is made possible by the headless architecture.
Single Sign-On supports this enhanced user experience, as all key communication and search functions are directly available at all times. Users move seamlessly between the communication and information platforms. The enhanced content management system offers content editors greater flexibility in creating content while managing multilingual content—with over 350 pages per language—and simplifies maintenance and updates.
The new, fresh design is based on Storybook and is harmoniously aligned with the platform’s design.
The success of the platform modernization is measurable:
The number of registrations by au pairs and host families rose by 40% in July. Organic traffic doubled (+104%), and user engagement time increased by 53% (from 11h33m to 17h40m), underscoring the significantly improved platform experience. At the same time, content editing and website optimization have been made significantly easier, leading to substantial time savings for staff and enabling the integration of AI components. The reduced complexity has made maintenance and upkeep simpler. The success is particularly evident in the significant improvement in Core Web Vitals, especially for mobile use: Time to First Byte improved by 132%, and chat load times were reduced by 75% (to 0.72s).
The platform was continuously available throughout the entire project, with the exception of a brief period of downtime during the go-live. These technical advancements also lay a solid foundation for further optimizations and the planned evolution into an app.
Approach
To improve the user experience and make it stable and modern, the backend—which had evolved over the years—was thoroughly analyzed. The platform’s complexity required a well-thought-out approach to create an app-like user experience, especially on mobile devices, while also implementing accessibility guidelines.
Following the system analysis conducted by 1xINTERNET, we evaluated the possibility of separating the platform from the website. This separation enables a complete fresh start without legacy baggage and leverages the full flexibility of content processing and SEO optimization offered by the 1xINTERNET DXP product.
All current content had to remain intact during implementation. While the system remained in operation, the platform was prepared for the upcoming iteration.
Solution
In July 2025, the decoupled solution went live: The new modular architecture separates the website—which contains information and serves as a public showcase—from the communication platform for private communication between au pairs and host families. Cross-domain tracking enables a seamless transition between the two platforms and supports single sign-on. Logged-in platform users are also recognized in the CMS and gain access to the Communication Dashboard, the Messenger, and EasyFind.
For registered users, the website is limited to a few features, such as profile creation, login, and registration. After logging in, they are directed to the communication platform for interactions between au pairs and host families. A consistent design ensures a seamless transition between systems.
Missing headless features for the user dashboard were added, including EasyFind results, favorites, profile details, and onboarding functions. The result is a single-page dashboard where users don’t have to leave the page or reload it. It operates headless and can be integrated into the new CMS website.
The Website
For the website, 1xINTERNET’s preconfigured Drupal-based content management distribution was implemented. The modular system is accessible and can be expanded as needed.
For unregistered users, the website offers a search function with limited filters that displays profiles matching the selected filters but includes only limited information about the users. The results are displayed in a sort of “shopping window experience.”
The website includes a full-text search and is optimized for multilingual use. The integrated “Content Editor Experience” uses artificial intelligence to simplify the creation and management of content through tagging, summarization, and text support.
Editors use a media library for existing design components and multimedia content, ensuring that the corporate identity is maintained. The user-friendly drag-and-drop interface with an intuitive design speeds up editing.
The systematically structured markup (JSON-LD) ensures strong SEO performance.
The Communication Platform
The headless platform for communication between au pairs and host families underwent a design relaunch and now features a fresh, modern look, intuitive user navigation, and a mobile-first approach.
To meet the need for a more flexible search, the search filters were integrated into the front end. All core functionalities for a successful search were consolidated into a headless dashboard.
Matching
The “EasyFind” matching feature ensures fast data transfer by dividing profiles into a fixed core section (name, age, nationality, etc.) and a variable search section (countries, preferred host family composition or au pair requirements, etc.). To optimize the intelligent matching algorithm, a decoupled front end using Elasticsearch was rebuilt.
“EasyFind” provides suitable suggestions based on individual profiles and search criteria and offers intuitive filtering options. The search results are clearly visualized. The advanced favorites features round out the user experience.
The WebSocket-based real-time messaging system is modeled after WhatsApp: it’s intuitive and seamless. The “Icebreaker” feature, with built-in text suggestions, makes it easier to make initial contact, while au pairs and host families can pin specific chats to find them more quickly.
The decoupling of system components and the implementation of advanced filtering options result in a state-of-the-art user experience, improved technical maintainability, and full compliance during continuous operation.
Challenges
The goal was to offer users an app-like experience, especially on mobile devices. This presented a complex challenge, as the multilingual website content and user functionalities had previously been tightly intertwined. Before decoupling, using the messenger frequently resulted in error messages when switching between multiple open tabs. Thanks to the decoupling of the website and the communication platform, as well as the switch to React, communication now runs smoothly, while the system-level separation remains invisible to users.
Conclusion
The project is based on an innovative Drupal architecture resulting from the strategic decoupling of a complex matching platform. The groundbreaking headless solution, featuring Elasticsearch integration and a React front end, offers approximately 40,000 active users worldwide an app-like user experience with 3 million data records and global availability.
The modern, user-centered approach led to a 40% increase in registrations, a doubling of organic traffic (+104%), and a 53% increase in user engagement time, thanks to a seamless user experience and a significant reduction in system complexity. The technical improvements are impressive: a 132% improvement in time-to-first-byte performance and 75% faster chat load times (from 2.88 seconds to 0.72 seconds).
