World Cancer Day Relaunch
The new design of the high-traffic website https://www.worldcancerday.org/ increases website visitor engagement.
10 million people die of cancer every year and the number continues to rise. World Cancer Day and its website exist to draw global attention to this important issue.
World Cancer Day takes place every year on February 4 and aims to raise awareness of cancer. The dedicated website https://www.worldcancerday.org/ is currently undergoing a comprehensive relaunch with a completely new design and will go live one week before the World Cancer Congress on September 17, 2024. The new features can be used in full from November 2024.
Since 2020, 1xINTERNET has been a proud supporter of the UICC and, in addition to optimizing its main website (uicc.org), helps the association to continuously optimize www.worldcancerday.org.
The fight against cancer is a global task and needs supporters!
That is why the World Cancer Day website has been completely overhauled and will in future impress with a very well thought-out CMS and many animating features.
The current campaign against cancer is set to run for three years (2025-2026-2027) and aims to raise awareness, inform and support people affected by cancer worldwide. The appealing design encourages people to become active themselves:
Scrollytelling
The new website contains scrollytelling elements that make it more dynamic and invite users to interact and scroll. These elements are combined with Lottie files for illustrated animations that provide users with an interesting scrolling experience.
A new search for the download area
Thanks to the decoupled search API, users can find the documents they need to prepare their planned events.
Get active, support campaigns
Overview map (Airbnb-style): Display of cancer-related activities around the world.
Submission support: Users can find the right form to submit the activities they are organizing in their countries/communities.
Stories that connect
An overview of different cancer-related stories with the possibility to react to them (like, support, etc.) invites visitors to share.
Visitors are also invited to share their story. There is a guided process for this with an integrated AI tool.
Create your poster
This feature, developed with a custom React app, allows users to create their own poster by uploading an image or entering custom text that can be instantly shared on social media. As the user creates their poster, they can automatically see how it will look on social media and customize the elements on the poster to their liking.
GLOBAL REACH
1xINTERNET has been managing the website since 2020 and the challenge is to optimize the global reach, provide a stable solution that can withstand the rush of visitors on February 4th and motivate more and more people to participate.
DOWNLOAD AREA
This area is particularly important because most educational activities take place online. In 2024, more than 45,000 pieces of information material were downloaded from the site in the days around February 4. There were peak loads with over 1 million requests per hour.
PROMOTING ENGAGEMENT
World Cancer Day recorded over 750 million views on social media in 2024 and more than 500,000 posts were published on social media.
This non-profit project impressively demonstrates the amount of data and different services a Drupal-based website can provide. The website shows that even peak times with a data transfer of more than 135 gigabytes per hour are possible with Drupal. The innovative features realized in Drupal, such as scrollytelling, improved search for materials, improved activity map, listing of exciting stories and more, create a dynamic experience for the users and present Drupal at its best.
